The original Dorcas Carey Library was completed in 1906, primarily with funds from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and has been enlarged several times. Authorâs collection.
The origin of the Upper Sandusky Community Library can be traced to a presentation Reverend Nathaniel Barrett Coulson Love arranged in the mid-1880s. He invited representatives from the Methodist Episcopal Publishing Company to discuss plans for starting a library in Upper Sandusky. Lowell B. Harris attended the talk and offered to match any funds raised. Over $2,000 in money and books were donated. The new Harris Library opened in the basement of the John Stewart Methodist Church. When a new church building was erected in 1899, the library was forced out and found a new home in the Union School.
A small account to erect a permanent library was started by the Usando Literary Club in April 1912. Funds originally were solicited door to door before a request was sent to Andrew Carnegie, who responded favorably. The Carnegie Public Library was completed in 1914 and dedicated on November 19. During its fiftieth anniversary, an addition was added. The expanded building served the community of Upper Sandusky until 1986. Ground was broken for a new library facility in April 1985, and the cornerstone was set that November. All the books, furniture and equipment were moved from the old building to the new building during April 1986. The new Upper Sandusky Community Library opened its doors in April and was formally dedicated on November 28, 1986. It continues to offer educational services to the public and promotes the countyâs history through the Heritage Room.
Henry Deisel began hand-rolling cigars in 1884 in Lima, Ohio. Two years later, he was joined by Henry and William Demmer, creating the Deisel-Wemmer Company. Their 250 employees could not meet the demand, and an additional plant was opened in Lima. By 1905, the company had expanded into nearby towns to meet the ever-growing desire for its products. Some of the new factories opened by 1913 were in Findlay, Bucyrus, Sidney, Bellefontaine and Toledo. The last two factories to be established by the company were in Upper Sandusky and Sandusky in 1919. At its peak, the company had seventeen factories and employed over 4,000 persons. Cigar-rolling machines were invented in 1915, resulting in much larger production numbers. To take advantage of this new technology and a huge postwar demand, the Deisel-Wemmer Company decided to expand once again.
The new San Felice and El Verso factory began operations on September 24, 1919, in a three-story building located at the corner of Sandusky and Johnson Streets in Upper Sandusky. The name can still be seen painted along the top of the building. A small force of several hundred worked on the second floor. By 1925, demand for cigars had begun to wane, and the company found itself closing and consolidating several plants, including the one at Upper Sandusky. In 1929, the company merged with the Gilbert Cigar Company, creating the Deisel-Wemmer-Gilbert (DWG) Cigar Company, remnants of which still exist today.
